Equine Therapy:

Equine therapy, also known as horse therapy or equine-assisted therapy, is a form of therapy that involves working with horses to promote physical, emotional, and mental health. It is often used as a complementary therapy for individuals with a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, autism, and addiction.

Equine therapy involves various activities with horses, such as grooming, feeding, and riding, that are designed to promote emotional regulation, increase self-esteem, and improve communication and social skills. The presence of horses is believed to provide a calming and grounding effect that can help individuals to manage stress and anxiety.

The benefits of equine therapy include improved mood, reduced anxiety and depression, increased self-confidence, improved communication and social skills, and improved physical health. It can also be a valuable tool for building trust, establishing boundaries, and developing empathy and compassion.

Overall, equine therapy has shown to be an effective and innovative therapy option for individuals with a range of mental health and emotional issues, as well as those seeking personal growth and development.

Fallow Deer had been introduced to Cyprus as long ago as the 9th millennium B.C. - and persisted until the 18th century A.D. The fallow deer (Dama Mesopotamica) is among the most beautiful animals that formerly lived on the island of Cyprus. Mesopotamian fallow deer were hunted on Cyprus during the 8th to 6th millenia B.C., at which point they were hunted to extinction.

Diversification of the food industry: Fallow Deer meat is a nutritious, lean, and healthy source of protein that can provide an alternative protein source to beef, pork, and poultry. Introducing Fallow Deer could diversify the food industry in Cyprus, providing consumers with more options for protein sources and reducing reliance on traditional meat sources. Venison is one of the most ethical and low-carbon meats one can eat and is a sustainable resource. It is high in protein and packed with B vitamins and iron.

Tourism opportunities: Fallow Deer can also provide a unique tourism opportunity, attracting visitors interested in hunting, wildlife watching, and eco-tourism. This could help to boost the local economy and create new job opportunities in rural areas.

Environmental benefits: Fallow deer are known to be effective grazers and browsers. Their presence will help manage vegetation in certain areas on Akamas Ranch, especially within the context of the Food Forest, preventing overgrowth and promoting the growth of diverse plant species. This will be particularly beneficial to Akamas Ranch where vegetation management is needed to maintain ecological balance. In terms of Habitat Restoration, fallow deer play a role in habitat restoration efforts. Their foraging behaviour mimics the effects of natural disturbances, such as grazing and browsing by native herbivores, which can help rejuvenate degraded habitats and promote the regeneration of native plant species. They also support biodiversity by providing habitat for other species and promoting a healthy ecosystem.
